Books drift for ordinary reasons: staff turnover, a rushed year-end, a software migration, a process that never quite fit the business. Cleanup separates what is actually supported from what has simply been carried forward. Where the surviving records cannot explain the balances, the activity is rebuilt from source documents until it can be traced again.
